It is likely that everyone in Nova Scotia has
sought the advice and services of a pharmacist - there are over
1100 licensed pharmacists practicing in our province.
Pharmacists work in retail pharmacies, hospitals, education and
research facilities, managed care settings, within government, and
the pharmaceutical industry.
The Nova Scotia College of Pharmacists is the regulatory body for
the practice of pharmacy and they have a simple, but important
mission statement and mandate; "Governing the practice of pharmacy
in Nova Scotia in the interest of the health and well being of the
public."
Internally, the College is governed by a Council which is
comprised of both elected pharmacists and appointed public
representatives. The Council sets the agenda for the College,
establishing its goals and policies while providing direction to
the College Registrar and Staff.
To accomplish its mandate, ensure public protection, and serve its
members, the College has several key tenets.
From their web site:
• establish and administer the
registration/licensing requirements and processes for
pharmacists and community pharmacies
• support the continued competence of pharmacists
• develop standards for pharmacy practice
• monitor pharmacy environments to ensure they meet appropriate
standards
• respond to complaints about pharmacists
• maintain a register of Nova Scotia pharmacists and pharmacies

The practice of pharmacy will continue to be an important part of
every person’s life.
